Chicago Public Schools/University of Chicago Internet Project (CUIP)

« back

Chicago Public Schools/University of Chicago Internet Project (CUIP) was a partnership between the Chicago Public Schools and the University of Chicago that brought Internet connectivity to 29 public schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods around the university and provided technology support to help teachers integrate the Internet into classroom instruction. Rockman conducted two studies:

1) The first consisted of a series of interviews, surveys, and focus groups with school, district, and university personnel designed to explore areas of impact and concern.

2) The second study, using similar data collection methods, looked at site elements that made the CUIP model work and at the success of CUIP offshoots — a summer Web Institute for Teachers, a digital library (eCUIP), and museum partnerships (Web Docents). The second study also explored why the CUIP model works when other technology-driven school reform efforts may not. It also looked at lingering issues of technology access and integration in urban schools, and at sustainability.
